AMI Consulting Engineers and Nordic Group collaborated on the rehabilitation of a failing sheet pile dock wall and marine loading facility at the International Shipbreaking Limited (ISL) Barge Loading Dock located within the Port of Brownsville, Texas. The project was completed through a Design-Build approach that integrated engineering analysis, constructability review, marine construction planning, and dock wall rehabilitation to restore functionality and extend the service life of a critical industrial waterfront asset.
AMI was retained to evaluate the existing cantilevered sheet pile dock wall, which had experienced significant movement and was no longer suitable for loading and unloading operations in its existing condition. AMI performed structural analysis of the dock wall system and designed a new anchorage rehabilitation system to stabilize the structure and allow continued marine operations. Engineering services included assessment of existing conditions, tieback system design, dock wall stability analysis, constructability coordination, and preparation of rehabilitation plans to support owner review and approval. Particular consideration was given to dock wall loading conditions, dredge-related impacts, expansive soil conditions, and long-term structural performance.
Working collaboratively with the design team, Nordic Group provided marine construction services associated with rehabilitation of the waterfront facility. Construction activities included demolition, excavation, installation of the new anchor wall system, construction of approximately 9,500 square feet of reinforced concrete slab, placement and finishing of a new concrete dock cap, final grading and compaction, installation of new fender piles, and site restoration. Nordic coordinated construction sequencing, material procurement, safety management, and quality control activities to support efficient project execution while maintaining compliance with OSHA safety requirements.
